If you haven’t watched Ted Lasso, just X out of this blog and start streaming it now! It’s that good, trust me.
I especially loved the exchange between Keeley and Rebecca in this week’s episode, after Keeley kicked butt as the PR Manager of the football team.
Rebecca: People who are amazing at their job don’t have to point it out.
Keeley: Actually, that’s not how it works anymore. It’s all about promoting your own brand.
That’s my girl!!!
Totally 100% agree – our work does not speak for itself.
In fact, studies by researchers at Brown University show that “justified bragging” (a.k.a. tooting your own horn as long as you can back up those claims) is POSITIVE. People who humbly stay quiet about their achievements are seen as less capable. Study author Patrick Hecks says it’s “imperative for people to brag on the job, as long as they’re being truthful.”
Like Keeley says, we have to speak up for our own work and articulate our value. If we aren’t, we miss out on transformational opportunities that can benefit the people we serve – whether it’s the footballers of AFC Richmond or the community you serve as a social impact professional.
